Dr. Sherwood and Areli conduct rural medical clinics in impoverished areas of the Quiche’ region assisting Guatemalan families with their medical needs. Clinics are conducted in churches, schools, and on occasion, in an actual medical facility, or where the need arises.
Dr. Pope is accredited to train visiting Medical Students from the United States. We are also a training site for the Institute for International Medicine (INMED). Visiting students participate in all of the mission’s activities and receive valuable hands-on medical and clinical experience. We hope this experience will encourage medical professionals to serve those in need.
Paul and Lindsey Argueta are attending medical school in Xela, Guatemala. Agape in Action is providing the financial support for their training. Paul and Lindsey began working with Agape several years ago as a driver and nurse, and have since then felt the calling to attend medical school. They step in during their school vacations to help as well as when Dr. Sherwood and Areli Pope are visiting back in the United States.

Agape in Action has grown to be accepted as a vital part of the local Santa Cruz community. To a large degree this is because we are closely identified with our partners who are local pastors, educators, medical professionals and other missionaries all working together. Missions teams from the United States have returned over many years and forged relationships that remain strong. We invest and work hard in the community because we are most effective when we combine our talents with those of others who deeply care.
Work has been completed on the expansion of the Agape In Action dorm facility which added over 1,600 square feet of living space, comprised of 4 additional bedrooms, 2 living room areas and 4 new bathrooms. This addition is designed as dual purpose, as it can be used as either 2 separate apartment units or as additional dorm rooms for teams. The current facility can accommodate 24 individuals which will increase to 40 after the expansion is complete. A covered carport has also been added. Roy Simmons, an Agape In Action Board member has generously donated the expansion. We are also excited because Roy will be spending a good deal of his time working out of the facility on missions projects.
We ship medical supplies to our Quiche’ facility for our mission needs as well as donate supplies and equipment to the Santa Elena National Hospital and other health care providers. We support financially and share supplies and equipment with our missionary partners to help meet their needs. Our short term missions teams are also very generous and bring donations of much needed supplies. This is all organized and distributed to those with the greatest need.
